Carey Olsen Bermuda, a two-time winner, made the ranks of the Top Ten Employers for the fifth time. Having launched the Bermuda branch of the international law firm just eight years ago, the business has grown steadily to a staff of 65.
With the stated aim of being “the law firm of choice for progressive and ambitious local lawyers”, Carey Olsen takes career advancement seriously.
One staff member said: “Opportunities for growth and recognition are based on performance and contribution, not tenure or hierarchy, which is both motivating and empowering.”
Staff also praise a culture based on transparency, meritocracy and respect, with an excellent flow of information from the top throughout the firm.
“Leadership communicates openly and regularly, ensuring that everyone – from junior staff to senior lawyers – feels informed, included and heard,” one employee commented.
Management also recognises the importance of feedback in maintaining a motivated workforce. The firm conducts an annual employee survey, offers one-to-one meetings with managers and regular team meetings.
Carey Olsen is proactive in talent development, through its Investing in People Award, a scholarship that supports a Bermudian law student, and its Pupillage Programme, offered to two aspiring Bermudian lawyers, who are paired with senior lawyers for one-on-one training.
The mentoring programme helps new recruits integrate into the firm, while the Women’s Network supports female staff in realising their potential.
Among the generous benefits are 18 weeks of paid maternity leave. All employees can qualify for a bonus of as much as 30 per cent of salary, awarded based on team and individual performance.
Active in charitable support, Carey Olsen was a lap sponsor and participant in the Relay for Life, while supporting other organisations including Keep Bermuda Beautiful, Bermuda Cancer & Health, Bermuda Pride, The Grateful Bread and the Gina Spence Programme.
