The Berkeley Institute made the Top Ten Employers for a second successive year, climbing two places from its debut seventh position last year.

The 128-year-old school has a strong tradition of excellence in education. Given its high proportion of long-serving educators and zero turnover rate among teachers, the seriousness of that commitment is apparent.

The staff feel they are given the tools they need to do their job, and the support and motivation required to strive for excellence.

One employee said: “The leadership goes above and beyond to ensure the success of the students and staff. We have adequate resources to complete our work tasks . We have great technology access and equipment.”

The degree of autonomy that empowers employees is also evident – as one commented: “Employees are encouraged and trusted to do their best and not micromanaged.”

Other common themes that stand out in staff comments are the attention given to staff wellbeing, the cleanliness of the school, and the leadership of Keisha Douglas, the principal and a Berkeleyite herself. One employee said Ms Douglas “has a firm, yet compassionate hand on the steering wheel – she truly loves her students and is supportive of staff.”

Opportunities for professional development include Berkeley’s Aspiring Leadership Institute, open to all staff members with leadership aspirations, and EduCoach, an e-coaching platform that supports teachers and educators through individualised online coaching.

To help attract the teachers of the future, Berkeley offers teacher training through a structured practicum programme under the guidance of an experienced teacher as a mentor.

Overall, working at Berkeley comes with a powerful sense of purpose in living up to the school’s mission statement of ensuring “a stimulating learning environment that prepares students to lead full and purposeful lives and to assume leadership roles in both the local and global communities”.
