Lancashire Insurance Company is climbing up the rankings in its fifth appearance in the Top Ten Employers. Its third place this year marks progress from its sixth and seventh rankings in the previous two years.

The insurance and reinsurance group, which marks 20 years in business this year, prizes its culture, the Lancashire Way, which commits to “consistently empowering all staff towards personal and company success”.

Employees’ comments show enthusiasm over a strong and supportive workplace culture. Lancashire scores highly with its staff on leadership, professional development opportunities, philanthropic activities and its benefits package.

Lancashire provides full health insurance coverage, use of an internal gym and an annual $1,200 wellness allowance that reimburses employees for external gym, spa or other club memberships.

Staff also receive Lancashire Group share options each year as part of the company’s long-term incentive scheme, while all employees are eligible for bonuses based on company and individual performance. Lancashire also provides 26 weeks of paid maternity leave.

Staff seem happy with the professional development opportunities. A formally introduced internal mentoring programme, which pairs high performers with group executives, is intended to be expanded throughout the group.

One employee said: “Joining Lancashire brought more stability, as well as opportunities for career growth. I have been here for 15 years and haven’t considered going anywhere else during that time.”

One thing that appears to delight employees is the company’s vigorous support of charities. It schedules days for staff to volunteer and is well known as a perennial leading corporate fundraiser for the Relay for Life.

One employee said: “Via the Lancashire Foundation, we partner with some amazing charities. Since 2007, we have given $1.7 million to The Family Centre and another $1.7 million to Tomorrow’s Voices. There are numerous other local charities that we support as well.”
