Sun Life International took top honours in the Top Ten Employers awards for the second year running.

The business, which describes itself as “Bermudian by birth – global by reach”, provides innovative life insurance solutions to high-net-worth customers around the world.

As one staff member describes: “The business is focused on long-term achievement and results, and invests in the business and its people.”

Employees praise the compensation and benefits, while loving the flexibility of the hybrid working model, which allows great opportunity to work from outside the office.

One employee said: “Two anchor days (in office) per week, the rest can be done remotely if needed/wanted… The main goal is to get your work done – if you can do that working flexibly then the business supports you.” Staff also have the option of up to 20 days of international remote working.

SLI also topped the Top Ten’s Diversity Awards ranking. More than three-quarters of the staff of 73 are female, 78 per cent are Bermudian and more than half are Black.

Benefits include full healthcare coverage paid for in full by SLI for employees and their dependents, as well as 13 weeks of paid maternity leave, and performance-based bonuses targeting between 10 and 30 per cent of annual salary. SLI also provides financial support for external gym membership or other wellness-related activities, and for external childcare.

Staff benefit from mentorship aligned with specific career advancement goals for individuals, based on succession planning.

SLI provides internships for three students each summer on the BILTIR programme, sponsors a scholarship with BFIS, and works with high schools to help prepare students for interviews.

The company is also a keen supporter of charities, through volunteering and donations. SLI was the top corporate fundraiser in the Relay for Life for the past three years.
