Winning a scholarship can go far beyond academic advancement – it can unlock social, cultural and personal growth.

The Alliance Française des Bermudes Summer Scholarship Programme, known as the “Concours Annuel”, is one fine example of this.

Open to students aged 14 to 16, the programme offers a rare opportunity to spend three immersive weeks in France, combining language learning with personal development and cultural discovery.

The Alliance Française is a Bermuda-registered charity that was founded in 1965, and the scholarship programme is funded by the Christian Humann Foundation.”

Bryce Williams, a member of the Alliance Française Education Committee, said: “It offers students a once in a lifetime opportunity to gain exposure to a foreign culture, engage in new experiences and improve their French-language oral skills.

“But what amazes me most, each year, is the boost in personal confidence that the participants always achieve as a result of their time abroad.”

An immersive programme will improve your language skills, but this scholarship stands out because of what it can teach you about yourself.

Being placed in unfamiliar surroundings stretches you as a person: your ability to navigate different cultures, your willingness to be flexible, to embrace new opportunities and your confidence to engage with people and make yourself understood.

The scholarship reflects Alliance Française’s mission to build bridges between cultures and ensure that all interested students in Bermuda, regardless of academic ranking or background, feel empowered to apply.

Former recipients often describe the scholarship as a pivotal moment in their lives, one that not only broadened their horizons but directly shaped their academic pursuits and future career choices.

“The programme ignites skills that are transferable to all sorts of career paths and can really help prepare you for the future,” Mr Willams said. “Over the years we have had award recipients who went on to pursue a wide spectrum of career interests.”

Scholarship criteria

The award scheme is promoted directly to French teachers at both public and private schools and also via local radio and social media.

Academic grades are not the primary driver of the selection process; instead the selection committee looks for students with a genuine desire to experience a foreign culture and the opportunity to develop their language skills.

Emphasis is placed on a 350-word essay that each applicant must compose in French, outlining what has motivated them to apply for the scholarship, their cultural interests and how participating in the programme will benefit their future life and career goals.

Potential award recipients are also required to attend a personal interview which is conducted in French – perfect grammar is not expected, but students must demonstrate a sincere willingness to express themselves “en française”.

Frederique Nappée, president of Alliance Française des Bermudes, said: “We also consider how unique and transformative this experience would be for the student.

“If a candidate has never traveled to a French-speaking country and may not have the means to do so otherwise, we take that deeply into account when offering the opportunity.”

Award recipients are selected for their motivation and character, and the scholarship includes accommodation, activities, airfare, meals and tuition for the duration of the three-week programme. Mornings are typically spent in language classes, while afternoons and evenings are filled with cultural activities ranging from excursions to museums and beaches, to sports, themed dinners and movie nights.

Students also spend four days in Paris, visiting iconic landmarks, and applying their French language skills in real-world situations.

2025 scholarship recipients include Callie Lucas (Saltus Grammar School), Brianna Jones (Bermuda High School for Girls), Hailey Furtado (Mount St Agnes), Sailahn Martin (Berkeley Institute) and Alisdair Penz (Warwick Academy).
