Getting the most out of your Cloud based Applications

Most enterprises depend on a myriad of applications to run their business. Many of these are Cloud based, residing on hosted solutions outside of an enterprise’s private network.  As a result, users often experience performance and security issues because they lack control over prioritization and performance. Therefore, major Cloud platforms are now offering direct connectivity to their Cloud to enhance data performance and throughput, and to alleviate security concerns associated with Internet access.

This article discusses how Cloud and network providers are helping alleviate these issues and provides a specific case study of how a popular Cloud solution is being enabled locally in Bermuda to address these challenges.

It is commonly misconceived that a fast internet connection is capable of guaranteeing performance on Internet applications. Most high-speed internet connections are shared and are susceptible to the impacts of intermittent network performance and slowdowns attributed to latency and packet loss when networks are congested.

In fact, there are 3 key factors affecting end-user Cloud application performance:

1. Network Prioritization & Performance at an end-user’s location

A properly managed and designed network solution is required to prioritize in-house application traffic and its access to the Wide Area Network.

2. Public vs Dedicated Access to the Cloud

A private direct connection to the cloud is required to guarantee performance levels and avoid security issues.

3. No Major Cloud Platforms in Bermuda

Major Cloud providers, like Microsoft or AWS, only provide private access to their Cloud  in a handful of international cities.

Guaranteed network connectivity to the Cloud

In Bermuda, Telco network providers are best positioned to provide the guaranteed connection and performance enterprises need. They own and provide private, non-shared, separate from the Internet, connections from user locations to the Cloud access points in gateway cities without traffic contention or loss of data.

Local Case Study:

One Communications, Bermuda’s Tier 1 Solutions provider, recently implemented Microsoft Teams for a client with direct connection to Microsoft’s Cloud.  The Client, a large multi-national re-insurance company, was performing a global roll-out of their Microsoft Teams application.  The client had previously been utilizing Microsoft Teams as a work-from-home solution using strictly public Internet access.

Working directly with One Communications, the client was able to implement private access to the Microsoft Cloud, a managed telephony gateway to Microsoft Teams, and local number access in Bermuda. One Communications provided secure connections and guaranteed throughput from the client’s offices in Bermuda all the way to the Microsoft Cloud in New York and Toronto. The solution also provided a managed Voice Gateway and local telephone numbers that facilitated  local calling to and from Bermuda while saving the client money.

The client now benefits from One Communications’ ability to warehouse, configure, and implement IP Telephony phones for Microsoft Teams, as well as on-island maintenance and IT support for these devices.  The client is now able to connect to all major Cloud platforms securely and with guaranteed throughput and performance.
