  • How did you come up with the name Younicorn Girl?

I always wanted my business name to have something to do with unicorns, then I thought it was cool to use y-o-u at the beginning.

  • What inspired you to start your own business and become a kid-preneur?

Well it all started with Bermuda, in Bermuda we have a lot of hair products but none of them are all organic or just for kids. I also think we should be able to read the ingredients. I want to be a kid-preneur because I love owning my own business and I like the idea of helping people.

  • What does the term “kid-preneur” mean to you?

A kid owning their own business.

  • Why organic hair products and how are they important for kids & teens?

They’re important for children and people in general because you need to know what’s going in and on your body. Chemicals are not good.

  • How are the products made? What other products can we look forward to?

The products are made at my home in Bermuda with the help of my mom and step dad when I do big batches. I use all organic ingredients, and my shea butter is 100% raw and organic from Ghana made by widows to assist with their needs and the needs of their village.

In the near future, I will like to make scrubs, books and games for kids and teens. I want to help their minds and bodies.

  • Any advice for kids like you that are looking to start their own business?

You should make the time.  Put time aside and effort to do your best work.

  • What are your plans for your future? What do you hope to achieve?

I’d love to do more speaking events and events where I can sell my products. I’d also like to eventually put my products into local stores as well.

The Story of Louis Armstrong

Written and Illustrated by Jerrard K. Polk

My name is Virgil Williams Jr. My family calls me VW, but everyone in the old neighborhood called me VJ. Including POPS my favorite neighbor.

That’s what we called him, but to the world he was known as Louis Armstong.

Whenever POPS wasn’t traveling the globe playin’ his trumpet and singin’ like no body’s business, he was hangin’ out with us kids in Corona.

All the kids wanted to live on the same block as POPS, I was fortunate enough to live across the street. He would always wave to me when he saw me sittin’ on my stoop and yell out in his deep gravelly voice, “Hey VJ, how you doin’ today?”

When we saw his car coming down the street, and he got out we’d run up and greet him with a big, “welcome home POPS. Kids would come from out of nowhere to help him with his bags and trumpet case.

Everyone wanted to help ‘cause they knew that Mrs. Lucille was going to have ice cream for one and all. That was just the start of the fun.

When POPS was home he would invite you inside to watch a western on TV, or to eat some of Mrs. Lucille’s legendary home cooking.

We loved it when he asked us to help him walk his dog named Trinket.  While we walked, he told us all sorts of stories about the places he’d been and the people he’d met.

Quite often he would give us a master class in trumpet playin’ right on the front stoop.

A few times he lined us kids up behind him and we marched and danced around the block in a New Orleans style parade!

I’ll never forget though, when he came off the road and he stayed for a long time.  We kids knew he was home, cause we could see his trumpet gleaming through the window as it sat on his bed side table. Still, we never saw him, my mother told me that he was quite ill.

After several months, he got his strength back enough to go on the road to play and sing like he loved.

Before too long though, he was back to being tired and the doctor told him that he should retire.  POPS just couldn’t do it, there was too much music still left in him.

On the day that the neighborhood said its final farewell to its most famous resident, us kids made a big banner that read, “We’ll miss you POPS”.

We kids that grew up in Corona will never forget Louis Armstrong and his beloved Lucille.  They took us in and always made us feel like family. Maybe they did that ‘cause they had no kids of their own, or maybe they remember fondly when adults took an interest in them.

Their house on 107th is still there.  Today, it’s a museum and National Historic Landmark.  It still looks the same, just as when I was a little boy.

When I play, I always think of my favorite neighbor.

Although known by the world as Satchmo, Satch, and Louie, we will always remember him as our beloved POPS.

Fun Fact: Louis Armstrong, one of history’s greatest jazz musicians, was born on August 4th, 1901 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Aaron Lugo Jr

Age: 10

School: Francis Patton Primary School (lighthouse leader & red house vice-captain)

Hobbies: Aerial yoga, track, martial arts & cricket

Aaron has been doing Jiu-Jitsu for one and a half years and is currently a first degree yellow/black belt. Aaron’s goal is to get his next stripe to become a second degree yellow/black in the next few months. He currently trains every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Aaron aspires to obtain his black belt, to compete in different places around the world, and to meet other people.  Aaron likes Jiu-Jitsu because he loves to learn the different self-defense techniques. His two favorite moves are the arm bar and the guillotine choke hold.  He also enjoys the warm ups that he does in the class. In the world, he would like to see peace and joy, and he thinks there should be chocolate included in every store!

Evelyn Czember

Age: 9

School: Saltus Grammar

Hobbies: Baseball, golf & is learning piano

Evelyn’s Jiu-Jitsu journey commenced in September 2018 and it has quickly become her favorite sport. She trains 3 days a week and would train all 7 if her schedule permitted. She also enjoys helping Sensei twice a week with the beginner class her younger brother attends. She likes Jiu-Jitsu as it “teachers her self-defense, but I don’t have to break boards”. The main reasons she enjoys training are Sensei Cyril and her training partners, who have become her friends. She says, “Sensei Cyril is nice, fun and teaches us lots of cool stuff” and the kids are “kind, fun, caring and sometimes funny”. Evelyn thinks it is “really cool that boys and lots of girls are in Jiu-Jitsu”. She prefers training with the girls but says “it is more fun to beat the boys”. Evelyn’s favorite submission is an arm-bar and she would like to keep practicing Jiu-Jitsu until she is very old and becomes a Sensei.

What is a psychologist?

Psychologists have the professional training and clinical skills to help people learn to cope more effectively with life issues and problems.

Why do kids see psychologists?

Many children and teens face problems that affect how they feel, act or learn. When children face problems that they cannot deal with alone or with the help of a parent or supportive adult, they might see a psychologist. Psychologists engage children in therapyto help them to learn strategies to manage their feelings and behaviors. Therapy can also help to teach kids strategies that help with learning. Psychologists can also do assessmentsto clarify what particular areas kids may be struggling with, especially in school with things like reading, writing or math.

What kinds of problems do you help kids with?

I help kids who may be facing family problems, school problems, health problems and even bullying. I also help kids with feelings like sadness, anger, stress and worry, low self-esteem and grief.

How old do I have to be to see a psychologist?

I work with children and teens from the age of 4 to 18 and sometimes older. When children come to therapy, their parents or guardians are almost always involved as well.

What happens in therapy?

At first, the psychologist will meet with you and your parents to ask questions and listen to learn all about you, your family and the problem that you are struggling with. The psychologist will then let you know how they can help. In future sessions, you will talk with the psychologist to express your feelings, you will do activities that will help you to learn skills to manage your problem, you will practice the skills that you are learning and you may even learn problem solving skills that will help you to manage when challenges arise in the future.

How long will I need to see a psychologist?

The goal of therapy is to teach you ways to manage problems when they arise. Since you will be learning how to better cope with problems, you will not need to see a psychologist forever. Most times, you will have weekly appointments for a few months.

Ages 8-10

Supplies:

  • Jar, vase or a vertical container that is clear and see through
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil
  • Food colouring
  • Small bowl or measuring cup
  • Fork

Method:

  1. Fill your container almost to the top with water
  2. In a small bowl or measuring cup, add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and a couple drops of food colouring. You can choose how many different colours you want to add.
  3. Using a fork, whisk the food colour and oil until you get tiny droplets of food colouring.
  4. Once mixed, pour the oil mixture into the container of water.

The oil will drop towards the bottom of the container immediately, then rise back to the surface, as water and oil do not mix. It won’t be long until tiny droplets of food colouring drop down into the container creating a firework effect.
