As a retired ‘big city’ lawyer my frugal grandfather sported a paisley ascot and shiny black dress shoes with well-worn dress pants every day and saw little reason to purchase new clothes, reasoning that if this attire was good enough for the courtroom, surely his herd of twenty cattle wouldn’t mind.

With a clean shave and Aqua Velva rounding out his farmhouse ensemble I wouldn’t call his look ‘typical’, but I would say that he had much in common with many other older men in that he maintained the ‘go with what you know’ approach to wardrobe and style in later life.

For men ‘of a certain age’, keeping up appearances by updating their wardrobe and personal style is not just a mood elevator, it can bolster confidence and actually make you look like you’ve lost a pound or two without even working up a sweat.

While there is certainly nothing wrong with sticking to your comfort zone, on a daily basis, the following guide might be just the thing to consult if you have a hankering to change things up a bit or even just tuck away in the sock drawer for future reference:

FIT IS VITAL

The brutal truth is baggy or oversized outfits can make you appear older. Instead, opt for well-tailored garments that flatter your body shape. “Despite the fact that many older men feel self-conscious wearing slim-fitting trousers, they can actually make you look slimmer,” advised Sharon Bartram, owner of 27th Century Boutique on Reid Street.

Before you head out (or are dragged out) to go shopping, take a good look at what you already have in your closet and then try to purchase an item that will co-ordinate with or extend their use.

“Particularly if you have an event to go to and you need to work within a budget, I ask men to think about what dress pants they already own and then help them pick out a new dress shirt to go with them,” Ms Bartram explained.

If possible, it is best to keep your eye out for a few timeless pieces that will never go out of style and then try to purchase them on sale when there is not an urgent use for them – that way you can choose things you actually like without overspending.

Items like a well-fitted blazer, tailored trousers, a quality pair of jeans and a couple of dress shirts will serve as the foundation for any man’s wardrobe, and not leave you scrambling when that invite to your granddaughter’s graduation comes along.

ACCESSORIZE STRATEGICALLY

Even though chunky gold chains and ID tags might have been ‘de rigueur’ in your disco dancing days, they are perhaps less essential in this modern era. But, a stylish watch might be worth the investment. As is the case with a classic leather wallet, belt, cotton pocket square, or sun-protecting hat, all of which can be found at Flatts Menswear.

Originally purchased in 1979 by her beloved father Mickey Adderley, daughter Jennifer Lindo is continuing the family tradition of outfitting the island’s men with quality clothes for work or recreation. “At the moment we are the only supplier of Big and Tall items in Bermuda,” said Ms Lindo, “and we also stock a great range of sportswear and work clothes”.

KEEP AN OPEN MIND

When it comes to updating your wardrobe both women agree that styles do change and it’s important to keep an open mind when you head out shopping. “A lot of men are used to wearing the same thing for a long time and they come in looking to replace an item with something that is exactly identical,” explained Ms Lindo. “That can be a little challenging when the item is 20 years old, and the original supplier has gone out of business!”

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

Older men also tend to prefer not to try things on in the store because they just want to get their errand over with as quickly as possible, but that frequently just wastes time in the long run said Ms Lindo. “It’s very important to try things on before making a purchase to ensure you are actually buying the correct size.” Whenever possible it is also best to come to the shop in person instead of sending someone else to choose for you.

“Not only do older men tend to wear a different size than they once did, but the way clothes are sized and labeled has also changed,” said Ms Bartram. “I can’t tell you how often people wind up having to make a second trip to the store to exchange sizes because they insisted on purchasing the size they used to wear years ago.”

A FEW SIMPLE SKIN STEPS

When it comes to skin care however, older men tend to fall into one of two categories – those who get that it is important and those who don’t. Nevertheless, taking care of your skin becomes increasingly important as you age.

Andrea Fubler, owner of Salt + Cedar on Front Street, which carries a whole range of products specially formulated for men recommends the following simple steps:

Consistency is key when it comes to daily skincare – developing a daily routine and sticking to it will achieve the best results.

Recognise that men’s skin tends to be thicker and oilier than women’s skin, and products specifically formulated for a man will work better.

If you are only going to do one thing, make sure you wear sunscreen whenever you go out. It is essential to protect against UV rays and slow aging from sun damage.

Applying moisturiser to your face at night is another easy step as it will soak in properly while you sleep.

Using an all-over body wash formulated for hair, face and body is a great way to treat yourself and still keep things simple.

Even making sure that you are staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water can improve the appearance of your skin.

AVAILABLE CURES AND ADVICE FOR THE MOST COMMON SLEEP DISORDERS

by VEJAY STEEDE

Sleep! It runs the gamut from luxurious to petrifying. For most of us, sleep provides relief, restoration, and reinvigoration. But for some, sleep is a time of anxiety, emotional distress, and exhaustion.

The development of sleep disorders can be heavily affected by stress levels. According to Dr Craig Rowat of Spine and Sport Bermuda, there is a clear link between stress and diagnosed sleep disorders:

“Disorders like insomnia and sleep apnea are some of the more common diagnoses that have shown a direct correlation with stress levels. With a person’s stress levels being somewhat subjective to measure, the role of stress can be difficult to measure; however, the presence of Covid-19 provided researchers with a unique opportunity to study stress as it relates to sleep.

“Researchers examined healthcare workers in hospitals during the Covid-19 outbreak, and were able to compare their sleep habits against data taken from healthcare workers prior to Covid-19 – as this is a highly studied population to begin with.

“In one study, the prevalence of sleep disorders amongst hospital workers during Covid-19 was 44 percent higher than pre-covid levels. This is a shocking statistic that demonstrates the havoc that stress can cause on your sleep. If you can help tame your stress, there is a good chance you can greatly help your quality of sleep.”

The very idea of a sleep disorder seems cruel. Sleep is the body’s time to rest, regroup and replenish. Anything that interferes with that process is a major problem.

Sleep Technician Joshua Dyball, of the Bermuda Center for Sleep Disorders, discusses the most common disorders treated at this local facility:

“Sleep related breathing disorders are seen most at our facility, and primarily Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA is a disruption in sleep characterised by repetitive episodes of complete or partial upper airway obstruction. Each episode lasts a minimum of 10 seconds and results in a reduction of blood oxygen saturation. Though this is the most common disorder we see, it remains dramatically under diagnosed and, when left untreated, increases the risk for many chronic illnesses and health problems.”

Mr Dyball expounded on treatments available at the centre: “The most common treatment available for OSA is positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy. This involves the use of a small machine and a mask to deliver pressurised air to your nose, mouth and throat while you sleep, thereby preventing the airway from collapsing. At our facility automatic PAP machines are typically prescribed as they are the most advanced and can determine the amount of pressure required to keep the airway open.

“A second line of treatment is oral appliance therapy (OAT). These removable devices are custom fabricated by a Sleep Qualified Dentist and are designed to bring the lower jaw forward and open the bite. This increases airway space and allows for less restricted airflow during sleep.”

For more entrenched sleep disorders, more comprehensive treatments may be necessary:

“Surgeries are sometimes recommended for people with OSA, or other sleep related breathing disorders, particularly if conservative therapy cannot be tolerated. This can involve removal of tissues at the back of the throat (tonsils, adenoids, part of the soft palate or uvula), repositioning the jaw, or widening the palate.

“A newer procedure called Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation uses a pacemaker type device which is implanted in the upper chest and electrically stimulates the tongue nerve throughout sleep to prevent it from obstructing the airway.”

On the role that stress plays in sleep and sleep disorder management, Mr Dyball is clear: “Both mental and physical stress contribute to the worsening of sleep disorders. Sleep disorders are themselves a source of stress. The sympathetic nervous system is activated during stress, thus preventing the regenerative benefits of healthy sleep.

“Stress drives a hormone called cortisol which drives our ‘fight or flight’ response which, in turn, hugely curtails our release of melatonin and our ability to relax and prepare for sleep. It can cause insomnia, reduce sleep quality, duration, and much more.

“Stress management can therefore help with the prevention of some sleep problems, and help to attenuate the worsening of certain symptoms.”

Of course, when one suffers from a sleep disorder, bedtime itself can be a stressor. Alleviating the stress of sleep-time can go a long way toward starting to get ahead of sleep disorders and getting better quality, effectively restorative, rest.

Mr Dyball highlights consistency and support when removing stress from the sleep-time routine:

“Making sleep-time less stressful will be relatively easy for some and a constant challenge for others. My biggest piece of advice when it comes to this is making time for, and prioritizing, sleep. It should be regular and consistent, with a similar wake up time and lay down time each night. Making the environment appealing and inviting is of huge importance, as well as focusing on areas that may need improvement when it comes to sleep hygiene.

“Speaking to your doctor, counselor, or a cognitive behavioral specialist can substantially help, as well as ensuring that you have support at work, with friends, family, and loved ones.”

Further tips for sleep disorder sufferers, as well as folks who just want to improve their sleep, include: Making sleep a priority that is just as vital to our lives as food, water and oxygen; creating a comfortable sleeping environment that is dark, cool and quiet; reducing LED and blue light exposure, which will suppress melatonin secretion and can alter circadian rhythm and sleep drive; exercising regularly; and avoiding alcohol and caffeine.

Finally, Mr Dyball asserted that “the goal is to create an environment that promotes achieving the quality, and quantity, of sleep necessary. Aids are needed to eliminate factors that are preventing regenerative sleep.”

With colours and prints evoking Bermuda’s natural environment, Daughters of Summer bathing suits are perfect for spending time at the beach or poolside. But what sets these versatile suits apart is the fact that the fabric is made from recycled materials, including ocean plastics like fishing nets and post-consumer materials such as plastic bottles. Everything that goes into the suits, from the design and manufacturing to the garment labels, packaging and hygienic liners, are considered for their impact on the environment. Working as a designer for large corporations in New York City, Daughters of Summer founder and creative director Kim Deuss knew she wanted to create a brand that considered environmental and social responsibility throughout every process of her business. “My business is not perfect, but that is not what is important. The most important thing is that we make our best efforts to make the most responsible business decisions in every part of the business process.” But growing up in Bermuda and spending time in the ocean diving and, more poignantly, the influence of her stepfather, Neil Burnie, all played an important role in teaching Kim an appreciation for our Island’s most precious resource – the ocean. “Daughters of Summer was created in loving memory of my stepfather, Neil Burnie, as a tribute to all he did and all he meant to me,” says Ms Deuss. While more companies are turning towards selling environmentally friendly products, there’s often little transparency in how the products actually are better for the environment. “As a consumer we have the greatest power of all,” says Ms Deuss. “Every time we make a purchasing decision, we are investing in a company and ultimately investing in how a company does business.” For that reason, Ms Deuss constantly researches new technologies and fabrics that will continue to provide even more sustainable options for her collection, including the new ready-to-wear pieces that she will launch later this year.

It is increasingly important to cover up, or slather ourselves in sunscreen, when enjoying our sunny summer days. In each case there are challenges, whether it is finding something modern and wearable, or ensuring we aren’t damaging our fragile underwater
ecosystem with the ingredients found in many sunscreens. Although Melissa Leach was first inspired to create a collection of luxurious eco-friendly bodysuits when she was diagnosed with melanoma 12 years ago, it was her search to find a fashion-conscious suit that solidified her plans to create Factor Bermuda, a sustainable line of swimwear. While working on the business side of highend fashion houses such as Burberry and Jimmy Choo, she always believed that the $20 billion swimwear industry would produce stylish sun protective clothing, but instead she found items that were overly sporty or frumpy. “My first instinct was to protect myself,” says Mrs Leach. But as she began to design her business, she knew it was also important to ensure that sustainability and the environment were factored into the finished product. With a keen eye for detail, a background in fashion business and strategy and an idea of exactly what she wanted to achieve with the line, she set out “to create a refined collection of swimwear with an elegant, minimalist style focusing on sun protection and sustainability.”

The sun protective aspect of the collection is important not only in terms of skin cancer but also anti-ageing.

Factor Bermuda’s capsule collection was launched in 2019 featuring four timeless silhouettes that offer varying degrees of coverage in three classic colours – deep navy blue, dark turquoise and solid black, making the bodysuits easy to transition to other activities away from the sun. “I refer to the collection as being streamlined, meaning that all of the body suits have been designed to wear as both swimwear and ready-to-wear,” explains Mrs Leach. She added that the capsule collection offers a range of styles, from the demure neckline and long sleeve of The Bateau Silhouette to the more sultry deep neckline and cap sleeve of The Plunge Silhouette. Each suit also features a removable belt that cinches at the waist to create the ultimate flattering silhouette. Simply removing the belt and slipping into a beautiful skirt effortlessly transitions the suit to ready-to-wear for lunch or drinks. “The reason behind this was to give women more choice in terms of levels of sun coverage and styling options,” Mrs Leach says. “Our collection provides the perfect foundation for your ultimate summer wardrobe.” But aside from being fashionable and offering a minimalist take on the items we have in our closets, Factor’s line of bodysuits is also environmentally friendly. The luxurious Italian lycra is derived from discarded fishing nets, but more importantly for your skin, the fabric has a UPF of 50+ that protects against 98 percent of all UV rays providing “a constant physical barrier, which is safer and more reliable than topical sunscreens, which require numerous careful applications to ensure a constant level of protection,” explains Mrs Leach. “The sun protective aspect of the collection is important not only in terms of skin cancer but also anti-ageing. Ninety percent of skin ageing comes from sun damage and is preventable.” Bermuda’s coastline played an influential part in ensuring the design and sustainability of Factor Bermuda’s products didn’t contribute to further waste, particularly in regards to the high-quality nature of the fabric. To limit the carbon footprint, the suits are made in New York and the packaging is made from recyclable paper, while the suits are delivered in a reusable swim pouch. “Living on the coast of Bermuda, I witness the impact daily of ocean waste and its negative affects on ocean life,” Mrs Leach says. “We are committed to making the most sustainable and ethical choices possible in every aspect as we continue to build the business and create simple, elegant designs that protect the skin, protect the environment and beautifully shape the body.” Mrs Leach also says working with and supporting Bermuda and Bermudians in every way possible is “at the heart of my business.”

Her promotional photos feature Bermudian model Lily Lightbourn Herbert and were shot at Unreasonable Studios in New York, a production company headed up by Bermudian artist Jon Legere.

ONE FASHION EXPERT WEIGHS IN ON THE TRENDS THAT HAVE COME AND GONE…

Do you remember where you were on Dec 31st 1999? When we all thought the celebrations into Y2K would result in crashed computers, the stock market plummeting or electricity failing throughout the world! Oh the Dramatics, and yet regardless of what we thought may or may not happen, the teenagers still flocked to Dockyard to watch the fireworks; probably wearing a pair of low rise jeans with their underwear exposed if they bent over (as this was the year Sisco’s ‘Thong Song’ debuted). Or perhaps you clung to the notion that pedal pushers were never going to go out of style and wore them casually with a pair of Grants Chinese slippers? We all did it at some point, but promise me if you still have a pair in your closet you’ll let them go and buy a leather mule.

After we realised that life continued when the clock struck midnight, the evolution of fashion became so absorbed by celebrities, which reigns truer today than ever before due to the immediate access of social sites like Instagram and Pinterest. JLo’s coveted velvet tracksuit and hoop earrings or Aaliyah’s baggy cargos and crop tops are just two examples of ladies in the early 2000’s who were unintentional trendsetters for the masses. Sex & the City, although debuting in the late 1990’s, became a coveted style muse for high-end designer brands in its later years.

Closer to the current decade, reality stars like the Kardashians (I shudder as I type that, but can’t deny their influence on so many fast fashion websites) have gone as far to make biker shorts a trend for day time wear (trust me – athleisure is here to stay, regardless of whether you’re a yummy mummy or not).

Although Bermuda is miles away from the fashion capitals of the world, we continue to evolve in large part due to the range of diversity in our people. I find myself admiring several women of all ages and backgrounds walking the streets of Hamilton. One with a classic wrap dress and pumps walking into a reinsurance building; another donning a pleated skirt with a fitted blouse (French tucked) paired with pointed stilettos headed into the bank; and another wearing a distressed boyfriend jean, silk tank top and crisp white sneakers headed into a day in the life of retail. Our seasons may be stretched due to our climate, but our country still manages to stay on trend year after year. Even our very own Bermuda Short made an international debut with fitted ladies’ silhouettes in wearable fabrics like denim; peaking in popularity around 2013 in international stores such as J Crew and Gap.

Over the span of a decade or two we’ve managed to hunker down and nail the most flattering silhouettes (think fit and flare dresses), elegant slides (remember, go buy a pair of mules), and most importantly the elevation in the quality of fabrics for a more attainable price point. You don’t need the price tag of a Louis Vuitton to invest in a gorgeous handbag anymore. So, when you next buy yourself a quality piece of clothing or an accessory, take care and hang onto it because in another decade your daughter might tell you ‘it’s back in style’ and she wants to borrow it…

by Nadia Laws

They say history repeats itself. Well, the same is true for fashion. RG Mags asked three style conscious women to weigh in on their inspirations from eras gone by and what the future of fashion could bring.

As a child, Rochelle Minors would lay on her parents’ bed watching Italian runway shows on the TV and dreaming about a future career in the fashion industry. “I knew one day that would be me,” she said. The former Miss Bermuda pageant winner, who took home the coveted crown in 2012, is now the designer behind Rochelle Nicole, a line that’s reinventing classic daywear for fashion-loving women.

While it was Ms Minors’ mom who first introduced her to paper dolls that she could dress up and experiment creatively with; it was actually her grandmother, Barbara Minors, that most inspired her current style. “I can see a lot of my grandmother’s influence in my style and the way I dress,” the 30-year-old said. “She was a classic woman and loved the latest fashions. She worked for Calypso most of her life, so you know she had ‘the best’ in her wardrobe.” To this day, Ms Minors loves wearing her grandmother’s vintage pieces; and admits a lot of her jewellery, accessories, handbags and even some jackets came from the senior’s closet. “I love the 60’s decade, mainly the colour blocking, which I incorporate into my personal wardrobe, as well as my designs,” she said.

Fashion trends tend to be cyclical and Ms Minors, a graduate of the University for the Creative Arts in London, UK, has seen 1980s and 90s inspired fashions make a serious comeback recently. This includes pencil dresses, tailored trousers, fitted blazers and slip dresses, which she doesn’t see going out of style anytime soon.

I love the 60’s decade,
mainly the color
blocking, which I
incorporate into
my personal wardrobe,
as well as my designs

Looking forward into the future, the Bermudian designer expects to see more European influences injected into local trends. “Over the last twenty years, our style has become more refined, chic, and put together,” she said. “Bermudian fashion has always been elegant, but now we are becoming more modern and moving away from baggy and mix-matched pieces, opting instead for slim cut suits, soft tailoring, co-ords, chic simple dresses and lots of colour. We’ve also embraced African culture and have seen traditional cloth being worn at various events around the Island.”

Seeing her mother walk in from work wearing a pair of knee-high chocolate suede boots with a pointed patent leather toe, was a defining moment in Shivani Seth’s early life. Only 12-years-old at the time, she remembers it being “love at first sight” – with her passion for all things fashion still going strong today. Currently, an international style consultant at Gibbons Company, Mrs Seth helps scores of men and women find greater confidence through dressing.

My current style
is often a mix of
East and West –
whether I pair
an outfit with
ethic jewellery
or I mix and

inspirations into
my everyday look

After launching her company ‘Style by Shivani’ four years ago while living in Dublin, Ireland, Mrs Seth has witnessed first-hand how quickly trends can come and go. She agrees wholeheartedly with the saying by iconic designer Yves Saint Laurent: ‘Fashions fade, but style is eternal’.

One of the designers from the past who has inspired her most is Christian Dior, who exploded onto the Paris fashion scene with his luxury pieces in 1947. Mrs Seth was lucky enough to see a Dior exhibition this past summer at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which showcased the brand’s creations inspired by countries around the world. “My current style is often a mix of East and West – whether I pair an outfit with ethic jewellery or I mix and match Eastern inspirations into my everyday look,” she said. Having been given the opportunity to live in Bermuda twice in the last two decades, Mrs Seth has seen the fashion and beauty scene on the Island evolve enormously. One of the most significant changes is the mindfulness that people are developing towards clothing, she said.

Mrs Seth admits she was shocked to learn that it takes 2,720 litres of water to make just one cotton t-shirt – this is equivalent to how much we normally drink over three years. “Worldwide consumers are rethinking their buying options, and many are now opting to buy more from second-hand stores and charity shops. Since my return to Bermuda, I was excited to see that Orange Bay Company was in existence. I’m equally proud to be working with Gibbons Company, which has recently made a big step away from plastics to recycled bags and which also carries eco-conscious brands like Mango.”

Catherine “CiCi” Araujo can’t remember a time when she wasn’t into fashion. Ever since she was little, she’s experimented with different styles, colours and trends and admittedly some suited her “much better” than others. From beyond ‘mini, mini’ skirts, to acid wash denim and diamante branded logo tees, Ms Araujo is happy to never again speak of some of those past failed attempts at fashion over the years.

The store manager and assistant buyer at Atelerie, said she loves getting to help women from all different countries, backgrounds and ages create a style they love through her day job. “I help people build a functional wardrobe and find creative ways to get more wear out of their clothes so they can feel more confident in their style,” she said.

When it comes to her own taste, she’s been most inspired by film and fashion icon, Audrey Hepburn. More recent inspiration has come from designer Anine Bing, author Leandra Medine and fashion blogger Alyssa Coscarelli. “With Alyssa Coscarelli in particular, I’m inspired by her most lately because she’s petite like myself and doesn’t let that stop her from wearing whatever she wants and experimenting with trends. No matter if it’s high-rise denim, flared jeans or maxi dresses, she doesn’t let her height limit what she wears, and I like to do the exact same.”

wears and I

Ms Araujo has seen the local style scene change quite a lot over the last decade or two. Most notably, she sees people on the Island freely and happily trying new trends and stepping away from classic and safe style choices. Instead of skinny jeans for instance, more people are testing out how flare or cropped boot cut-denim look on their figure. “I love seeing trends from the 60s through to 90s coming back in style, however there are definitely some trends we should do our best to keep in the past,” she said, with a laugh. “Altogether, Bermuda’s fashion scene has grown – you can truly see how different and unique we all collectively are through fashion and street style.”

Sue Khan

Three years ago, Sue Khan would look in her closet brimming with beautiful garments and still tell herself she had ‘nothing to wear’. Then, after the birth of her youngest daughter, she decided it was time to simplify her style. The 30-year-old entrepreneur and busy mom tells RG Magazine how shrinking her wardrobe saved time, reduced stress and proved to her when it comes to fashion, less truly is more.

The Breaking Point

I used to have racks of clothing but was so overwhelmed with simple tasks like doing laundry because I had so many clothes. Then, when there was a special occasion, I would have to buy something new just for that one event. I got to the point in 2016 where I said: ‘This is ridiculous, I’m consuming so much all the time’. I was juggling work and my personal life and knew that something had to change. I started embracing minimalism, sold my car and most of my kids’ stuff. Then I got rid of about 90 percent of my clothes and shoes.

Sigh of relief

Cleaning out my closets from all the clutter was a huge relief. With everything on my plate, I needed to be able to grab something and go. I had purchased a lot of clothes online that looked good in the pictures but just didn’t look good on my body type. To condense my wardrobe, I tried on everything – from pants, tops to dresses – and asked the questions: does this look good, does it make me feel confident and can this be worn with other items in my wardrobe? I realised from that exercise that my style was actually far simpler than I thought.

Gift that keeps on giving

I donated everything and started to feel really good about clearing out so much stuff. That’s when I started to invest in my wardrobe. I wanted quality, timeless pieces and things that I could easily wear all the time. It could be a simple t-shirt that paired well with a pencil skirt for work or jeans on the weekend. I also reduced my closet down to six pairs of shoes – a pump, single strap shoe, mules, gym sneakers and a couple of pairs of flats in neutral colours (and limited prints or patterns).

Dressed to Impress

Now, when I go to get dressed for work, it’s grab and go. Everything can be mixed and matched. It’s so easy, and there’s no stress– whether I’m going out to dinner, getting ready for a work meeting or running around with the kids. It’s also been good for my confidence because I feel great in everything I wear. I don’t claim to have fashion sense, but I know myself and what I like. My wardrobe is very slim, but it’s made my life so much simpler. I wear mostly neutral tones like black, nude and grey or may opt for a softer pink or olive green. I don’t even have a distinct summer and winter wardrobe anymore. I just wear the same pieces and will layer a trench coat or jacket on top.

CURATE YOUR CLOSET in three simple steps
  1. Declutter
Go through every item in your closet and drawers, try on everything and keep only those items you love without a doubt. Any items you haven’t worn in more than two years, that no longer fit your body or your style, give yourself permission to donate or get rid of.
  2. Determine your Style
Have a look at the pieces you have left in your closet and start to identify if there are any themes – be it particular styles, fabrics, patterns or colours. Then create a list of staple items you may need to complete those outfits.
  3. Develop a Wishlist
Once you have a clear idea of what you have and what pieces you still need to curate your closet, you can start to shop intentionally. Find pieces that are of good quality, versatile and can be worn in a myriad of different ways. Most importantly, make sure that every piece you purchase makes you feel confident and beautiful.

Remember: you don’t have to buy all these new items at once. Take your time and find classic pieces that you can happily wear time and again – whether getting dressed for date night or running errands on the weekends.

Today, the Bermuda Fashion Festival hosted its official press conference in the City Hall Foyer. This year’s festival is set to take place on July 7th – 13th, 2019 and will feature all the runway shows that we have grown to love throughout the years including some new and exciting runway shows and events.

The festival’s production company; Savvy Entertainment announced that this year they will be adding a new show to the week-long festival. The All-Star Designer Showcase will feature some of Bermuda’s lead fashion designers and industry professionals for the ultimate clash of the titan’s runway showcase.

“It’s amazes me that it’s been 10 years already. It has truly gone by so fast and I’ve loved every minute of organising this Festival. To see where we started out and now experience where we are as a recognised fashion event in the fashion community truly warms my heart”, says Executive Producer and Savvy COO, Danilee Trott.

“The City of Hamilton is delighted to once again be the host of what is this year, the 10th Anniversary of the Bermuda Fashion Festival. Over the past 9 years this Festival has become an event of extremely high standards. It continues to bring international models and designers of outstanding talent to the island, while also providing opportunities for our local fashion enthusiasts. This has become an event worthy of international acclaim with previous participants having launched their careers from the Festival runway and on to other parts of the globe.

This year the City partnered with Savvy Entertainment who is manning the reins of the organization and execution of the event. I have no doubt that this year’s event will surpass the previous ones in calibre, excitement, glitz and glamour. The City’s ‘vision’ states that we will be a ‘vibrant’ one and events such as the Bermuda Fashion Festival serve to fulfil that so we hope that our local community as well as visitors to Bermuda embrace the opportunity to come out and support our homegrown designers and models and experience the high-fashion collections and array of social events that will be showcased”, says Mayor Charles Gosling.

This year’s festival will once again feature Bermuda’s emerging fashion designers. Selected designers recently started the Bermuda Designer Mentorship Program which pairs them with international fashion designers, stylists, TV personalities and overall industry experts. The 10-year anniversary Bermuda Designer Showcase will feature:

  • Charda Simons & Kimmisha Perinchief; Street Lux

Mentor: Mickey Freeman; fashion designer & stylist

  • Chineza Augustus; Sevhun

Mentor: Lisa Nicole Cloud; fashion designer and TV personality

  • Christine Jones; Thirty86 Clothing

  • James Lee; XoeTiqu

Mentor: Melissa Leach; fashion designer and industry expert

  • Courtney Chiappa; SubTropic
