Done right, a salad is healthy, nutritious, delicious and filling. Done badly, you’re either starving an hour later or, in an attempt to make it satisfying, you have inadvertently laden it with unhealthy items such as creamy dressings or breaded meat.

To learn how to make the best salads this summer, we turned to nutritionist, Myra Dill, who shared her expertise and recipes.

“The secret to a satisfied feeling after salad is finding your balance by adding in proteins

with higher fibre vegetables and avoiding sugary or starchy ‘fun’ items such as dried fruits, croutons or high fat dressings,” she advised.

“I love to start with my greens, then add one or two bursts of colour through vegetables and maybe raw fruit – blueberries and applies are my personal favourite. Then, a healthy fat such as avocado or nuts, and top it with either a plant-based protein such as hemp hearts, seeds or beans, or a lean protein such as local fish, chicken breast or egg.”

To add flavour and avoid dressings, Ms Dill suggested throwing seasoned edamame, seasoned chickpeas or pickled vegetables on top.

If you do want a dressing, Ms Dill advised a simple olive oil and vinegar combination, a squeeze of lemon juice, or a homemade peanut sauce (recipe below).

Where possible, she tries to use locally-grown ingredients such as kale, spinach, microgreens, onions and cherry tomatoes from local farmers; avocadoes from our trees; wild-grown fennel and Nasturtiums; and herbs such as rosemary, mint and basil, which grow well in pots.

If you want to replace one of your usual picnic items with a salad, try her Summer Roll Salad. Ideal for the beach or boat:

SUMMER ROLL SALAD

  • 5 large leaves of spinach or romaine roughly chopped
  • 12 large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 large carrot, julienned
  • 2 cucumbers, julienned
  • 8 oz Napa or local cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce
  • 1 tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 c rice vinegar or Apple cider vinegar
  • 8 large rice paper sheets
  • 2 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 12 fresh mint leaves
  • 12 fresh basil leaves
  • Optional extras: local fennel, cilantro or ginger finely chopped, cooked vermicelli noodles, thinly sliced mango.
  • Optional protein: 3tbsp hemp seed hearts, 10 diced shrimp, or fresh local cooked fish of choice, or shredded cooked chicken.

Directions:

  1. In a medium bowl, mix together noodles (if using), carrot, cucumber, cabbage, fish sauce, sugar, and vinegar.
  2. To assemble rolls, place a sheet of rice paper in a medium bowl of warm water until just softened. Lift sheet carefully from water, placing it on a tea-towel-covered board.
  3. Place some of the vegetable filling horizontally in the center of the sheet and top with one mint leaf, one basil leaf, your protein choice, and hemp seeds.
  4. Fold edge closest to you up and over the filling; roll sheet to enclose filling, folding in sides after first complete turn of roll.
  5. Repeat with remaining sheets and filling.

PEANUT SAUCE

  • 1/2 c smooth all natural no added sugar peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 clove garlic, grated
  • 1 tbsp freshly grated ginger
  • 4 tbsp boiling water
  • 1/4 c crushed, toasted peanuts, for serving

Directions:

Whisk peanut butter, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, ginger, and boiling water until smooth. Top with peanuts and sesame seeds and serve alongside rolls.

Too busy to make your own ‘amped up’ salad? “WildGreens on Front Street have super fun choices of salad toppers that are still healthy,” recommended Ms Dill.

The transition from day to night after a long day or week at work gets a little better at the many happy hour spots where you can savour a speciality drink and snacks as well as the chill vibes as the summer heats up.

We’ve rounded up the best spots to spend some time relaxing into the evening at the island’s best happy hour spots.

SEABREEZE LOUNGE AT LIDO COMPLEX

With fabulous views and a happy hour almost every night of the week (every day except Mondays) the Seabreeze Lounge, just steps off of Elbow Beach, is the perfect spot for tempting drinks as the sun goes down or to indulge in freshly prepared sushi or light bites.

Summer happy hour at Seabreeze runs from Tuesday to Sunday between 5pm – 7.30pm with bar snacks and specially priced wine, beer and spirits available. Stay on into the evenings on Thursday and Friday to enjoy music from local acts including Kassie Caines and DJ Felix.

BREW

Once you’ve had your caffeine fix, head back to Brew and grab a seat at the perfect spot for people-watching on Front Street as the sun goes down. Brew’s happy hour offers a great option for a quick after-work drink and snack during the week, whether you want to grab a glass of wine, sample one of the Dockyard Brewing Co.’s draughts or enjoy some Swizzle on tap all while savouring a bowl of their famous guacamole. Happy hour at Brew runs from Monday to Friday from 4-7pm

HUCKLEBERRY

Set in a lush garden just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Front Street, Huckleberry has created an exclusive enclave perfect for relaxing after a long work week. Every Thursday and Friday, enjoy light bites that also includes inventive sweet treats from the award-winning kitchen paired with the bar’s craft cocktails – some of which can be shared and enjoyed in one litre carafes.

Huckleberry’s Happy Hour runs from 5.30 – 10pm Thursday and Fridays with music by DJ Felix every Thursday.

DÉJÀ VIEW

Fast becoming one of the most popular spots for after work happy hour on a Friday night, Déjà View opened in Barr’s Bay Park earlier this year, and the laidback, chilled vibe of a park happy hour spot is already luring crowds. While their sister restaurant, Misaki, is known for killer sushi, there is also a sushi menu to sample from here, as well as their extensive inventive menu. Along with great food and drink specials there’s also great music from local DJs including Nadanja to set the mood right.

Happy Hour at Déjà View is on Friday nights from 4.30-7.30pm.

MARINA NIGHTS AT 1609 BAR & RESTAURANT

The longstanding happy hour at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club is still one of the best ambiances to kick off the weekend. Right on the water’s edge overlooking Hamilton Harbour, the Friday night happy hour has proven time and time again why it’s a great place to enjoy a cocktail and a catch up with friends after a long work week. Whether indulging in one of the tequila-laced creative cocktails or tasting a selection of Latin-inspired bites from the asador, it’s the perfect place to get the party started. Marina Nights runs every Friday (excluding the Friday of Cup Match) from 5-10pm and features a line up of local DJs.

Summer in Bermuda is a wonderful. The water is glistening, the sand is sparkling, and the sun – the sun is beaming! This, however, is not always as great as it sounds. Over exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays and intense heat can do a lot of damage to our skin, so being sun safe is a major priority for keeping the good times rolling.

Azuree Williams is the Event and Programme Manager for the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre (BCHC), and she is very serious about promoting fun in the sun, the safe way!

Mrs Williams tirelessly espouses the importance of, “being SunSmart by Practicing the 5 S’s [five esses]: slipping on protective clothing, slopping on a mineral-based sunscreen (SPF 30 to 35), slapping on a broad-brimmed hat, seeking shade between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm, and sliding on sunglasses. This applies when you’re in the sun for long periods of more than 15-20mins.”

Why is Mrs Williams so passionate about sun safety? Because she’s serious about fighting cancer. “Skin cancer is the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer globally, and is most common in young adults. Five or more blistering sunburns can double one’s chances for skin cancer.”

The post millennial sun has gotten more intense than ever. When I grew up, we would play outside all day – I’d get my annual ‘summer coat’ of ‘paint’ sometime in late May. Normal folks would call that a sunburn, but I just peeled it off, and settled into my more tanned existence for the summer – it wasn’t even something to think twice about. That … was probably dangerous.

Being mindful of the sun and its tendency to burn human skin is more important now than ever, because we’ve evolved into beings who know that the best defense against cancer, is prevention. “Skin cancer is actually the most preventable cancer, because of the five prevention measures mentioned previously, as the 5 S’s.” Mrs Williams advises.

So, knowing what we know now, we can’t really just push our kids out into the searing Bermuda sun without making sure they are protected from its potentially deleterious effects. But the sun is everywhere! How can we protect our kids from something that is everywhere?! Mrs Williams breaks it down:

“It’s quite simple, by remembering the 5 S’s, and ensuring their summer camps of choice are SunSmart accredited through Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s SunSmart Accreditation programme.”

That’s right; the BCHC has a full SunSmart accreditation programme, and all local camps, schools, or childcare facilities should be actively seeking accreditation by now. The Centre also provides several other educational seminars and sessions for various school levels, educators, caregivers, and parents alike.

“We offer free SunSmart presentations: Protecting the Skin You’re In for middle school, senior school, community, and corporate groups; and fun interactive presentations for preschoolers and primary schoolers. Additionally, free SunSmart accreditation training registration is open, and closes June 16. For more information on all that the SunSmart programme has on offer, please visit www.chc.bm.”

To be honest, I still lean on my ‘summer coat’ ritual to protect me from the sun – I don’t tend to burn again after the first time – but that’s a very bad idea. Knowing what we know now – and loving fun in the sun like we do – keeping our kids safe while they revel in the Bermuda sun is as high a priority as there can be on a lazy summer day by the water.

Heed the warnings, use the sunscreen, carry a cover (whether a full gazebo, or a simple umbrella) – protect yourself, and protect your family!

Bermuda is world renowned for our dazzling pink sand beaches. Clear blue waters are universally coveted, but what do born-and-bred Bermudians value? Are the famously picturesque spots like Horseshoe Bay also local family favourites?

Kirk Atwell holds memories of family time at Somerset Long Bay most dear. “From as long as I can remember, I grew up going to Long Bay Beach in Somerset. I have many fond memories of family picnics there, especially during the Cup Match weekend.”

Having relocated to Toronto, Canada many years ago, Mr Atwell regularly brings his family back home to visit their favourite Bermuda beach: “Horseshoe Bay is a must visit whenever I bring the girls. It’s actually their favourite.”

Families with young children will surely adore Somerset Long Bay. The beach is usually calm, features a plateau that keeps the water shallow for what seems like 100 meters, and offers a clear view for keeping an eye on the little ones at all times.

Krystal McKenzie also names Horseshoe Bay as a family favourite, while also noting John Smith’s Bay, Warwick Long Bay, and Jobson’s Cove. “Not only are they beautiful and easy to get to, but for the most part, they also have facilities that a family might need (i.e., bathrooms, rinsing stations, and food).”

Convenience is absolutely a real consideration when choosing where to take the family for a dip, and many beaches have put concessions and rinsing stations in place for that very purpose. Places like Clearwater Beach and Tobacco Bay also offer similar facilities.

John Smith’s Bay is a definite favourite family beach for Bermudians. Thomas Smith emphasizes the ‘neighbourhood’ feel of the beach, while Jodie Rudo waxes poetic about the ‘perfect’ waves:

“My favourite beach in Bermuda is John’s Smith’s Bay. What I love about this beach is the perfect size of the waves. They are not too big or too small, making it an ideal spot for a day of fun in the water.

“One of my favourite memories at John Smith’s Bay was when my girls and I decided to try boogie boarding and attempted to surf the waves. However, the waves had other plans for us! We were knocked off our boards multiple times and ended up rolling in the waves, laughing, and enjoying every moment of it.”

Here is where I have to mention Turtle Bay. This little gem of a beach is located just South of Clearwater Beach, at the gate to Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve. This is a beach that we didn’t grow up swimming at, because the U.S. base restricted access for Bermudians, but the beach is absolutely delightful!

Jodie Rudo agrees: “Another one of my favourite beaches in Bermuda is Turtle Bay. It’s an incredible spot for camping, especially during the Cupmatch holiday. We had the opportunity to set up our tents right by the beach, and waking up to the sound of the ocean was magical. Before even having breakfast, my family and I would jump into the crystal-clear waters for a refreshing morning swim. It was a fantastic way to start the day and create lasting memories with loved ones.”

I try to take my son to Turtle Bay at least twice a week after school in June and September, and all the time during the summer – it’s our spot!

The last beach that demands to be mentioned is Admiralty House. Once again, Mrs Rudo says it best: “Admiralty House holds a special place in my heart. Some of my most cherished experiences there are Sunday barbequing on the hill, and taking turns jumping off the cliffs into the crystal-clear waters below. The thrill and excitement of the cliff jumps make it an unforgettable experience.”

Nothing beats the summer months in Bermuda as a kid. Whether it’s spending all day at summer camp or weekends at the beach, there’s always something on to keep little ones busy. We’ve rounded up some of the best events taking place this summer with kids in mind. Some are specifically designed for kids, others are great fun for the whole family and to take young ones along.

SUMMER SUNDAY – CITY FUNDAY (July 16)

The Summer Sunday festival in Victoria Park put on by the City of Hamilton always has the perfect mix of entertainment and activities for everyone in the family. The event, which celebrates local music and talent is free admission, and the park is always filled with the requisite bouncy castles, games and activities. The event runs from 12pm-5pm, and with plenty of vendors on tap there will be no shortage of food and treats to make an entire day of it.

For updates and more information about the event, follow the City of Hamilton social media channels or visit www.cityofhamilton.bm.

CUP MATCH CLASSIC (August 3 + 4)

For little cricket enthusiasts, spending a day at the island’s iconic Cup Match Classic is an inspiring experience for potential future players. Even if the game isn’t something your kids are interested in the festival-like atmosphere, team rivalry and local food vendors make it a fun way to spend the summer holiday weekend and soak up the island’s culture. Cup Match takes place at the St George’s Cricket Club this year on the first Thursday and Friday of August. While both days have their reasons to take part in the Classic with your kids, heading to the grounds early in the day, particularly on the Thursday tends to be less crowded and a little more child-friendly. Either way, kids will have a blast rooting on their favourite team.

For more information, contact St George’s Cricket Club at 297-3018.

PRIDE BERMUDA HOMECOMING (August 26)

Kids will revel in the sights, sounds and the message of acceptance as they march through the streets of Hamilton at the annual Pride Bermuda Parade. The theme of Homecoming marks the third parade, this year organized by OUTBermuda. While late August can be high heat for kids to be out for the entire march, there will also be a Party in the Park at Victoria Park, where there will be entertainment and food vendors, so families can still show support for the LGBTQ+ community if walking the full parade route isn’t doable. Along with the Parade and Party in the Park, families are invited to the Pride Worship Service on Sunday, August 27 at Wesley Methodist Church at 11am.

For more information about Pride Bermuda, follow their social medial channels or visit www.pride.bm.

BERMUDA SANDCASTLE COMPETITION (September 2)

For one last hurrah before the school year begins, the Bermuda Sandcastle Competition provides the opportunity to take all those hours playing in the sand on the beach over the summer and gives kids (and adults) a chance to win prizes for their creative sand monuments. The annual sandcastle building event, which takes place on Horseshoe Bay the Saturday before Labour Day, runs throughout the day from 9.30am to 4pm for those who want to show off their building skills, with judging taking place at 4pm for those who prefer just coming for a look at some of the fantastic creations that have in the past ranged from lighthouses to sea monsters.

Those looking to add a few more tips and tricks to their building repertoire can take part in the Sandcastle workshops and tutorials taking place on August 26 & 27 as well as August 30 & 31.

For more information, visit www.sandcastle.bm or email [email protected].

ST. GEORGE’S SEAFOOD FESTIVAL (September 17)

As the summer comes to a close and the school year gets into full swing, take one more opportunity to spend a day out with the kids in St George’s enjoying one of Bermuda’s favourite and most celebrated cuisine – seafood! Last year’s inaugural event was a huge hit and featured local favourites like deep fried fish and mussel stews from local vendors. Along with delicious food and favourite treats like snow cones and sugar cookies, there will also be a kids park area with all the fun favourite activities like bouncy castles, miniature golf and mini go-carts all with the perfect backdrop of the Town of St. George’s. The Seafood Festival takes place from 12pm-7pm on Ordnance Island.

For more information, visit www. corpstgeorge.bm.

Throughout Summer

HARBOUR NIGHTS (Every Wednesday)

Everyone has that one memory of Harbour Nights when they were a kid. Whether it’s walking the streets with your friends, hanging out in the kids zone or snacking on mini doughnuts, every Wednesday the street festival has become a right of passage. Running until August 30, Harbour Nights takes places from 7pm to 10 pm, and each week can expect to see Gombeys, live entertainment, a range of local delicious food vendors and unique crafts and locally made items.

For more information, visit www.bermudachamber.bm.

DESTINATION DOCKYARD (July 20 + August 24)

On Thursday evenings, Dockyard transforms into a family-friendly affair featuring vendors and local food and snacks, many from the surrounding Dockyard businesses. But what sets this event apart is the fun activities for kids including free roller skating. Along with other kids activities such as fun castles and face painting, the evening will also feature live entertainment, including the Gombeys.

Destination Dockyard takes place from 6pm to 9pm on the North Lawn.

Whether you like peace and quiet, a lively atmosphere, or anything in between – whoever you are, you’ll find something to put a smile on your face at Cup Match.

Many families have traditions dating back decades, from camping at the side of the road to barbecuing on the beach or swimming in the refreshing clear blue water.

In recent times, late-night parties and concerts have established themselves as modern-day Cup Match traditions by bringing live entertainment and more excitement to the long holiday weekend.

There’s so much to do in four days on these 21 square miles – and that’s before we even mention the cricket…

Here’s our guide to a fun Cup Match this summer.

NO FILTER – CUP MATCH EVE EDM FESTIVAL

What better way to kick off Cup Match 2023 than a major party at one of Bermuda’s biggest venues?

Walshy Fire, Grandtheft and Natty Rico are among the star performers lined up for the electronic dance music bonanza at the National Sports Centre on Wednesday, August 2.

Local promoters Rowan Ramotar and Declan Harris have teamed up with Douglas Olsen of The Terrace to create the concert which will draw a crowd of thousands.

EDM lovers will know Walshy Fire as the point man from Major Lazer; Canadian Grandtheft has headlined major shows in North America and Europe; while the talented Natty Rico mixes and plays a saxophone at the same time.

“People are going to be super-excited about this line-up,” Mr Harris said.

“This event has more talent for it than we have time for. The crowd will be shouting for more because there’s so much talent.”

Mr Harris expects a fairly young crowd but notes EDM appeals to people of all ages.

“The great thing about this concert is that people will want high velocity, high energy the night before Cup Match,” he added.

“EDM is perfect for that because you’re going to get the lights, you’re going to get the smoke, you’re going to get all these variables that people look forward to, to start off the holiday.”

CUP MATCH FEVER

Now in its 16th year, Cup Match Fever is one of the island’s modern traditions.

“Everyone knows now, you go to the cricket game, you enjoy the game for two days. And then, after the game on Friday you head down and continue the celebrations at Cup Match Fever,” Mr Ramotar said.

Noah Power and DJ Polish, a top DJ duo from New York, are among the line-up at the event at Fort St Catherine on Friday, August 4.

Other performers include Chromatic Creep and JR, who have played at major events in the Caribbean and North America, top Jamaica DJ ZJ Liquid and local stars Mista Genius and Rusty G.

“We have a full slate of entertainment to please everyone from all age groups – reggae, soca, hip-hop,” Mr Harris said.

“We realise people like to see live shows before Cup Match. But on the Friday after the game, they don’t want to see live acts, they want to dance, they want to hear music.

“When they finish the game, they just want to come out and party and have a good time with quality DJs that play good music. That’s what we’ve provided over the years and that’s why we’ve been able to survive this long.”

This year’s venue has a capacity of about 800 so people are encouraged to get tickets early.

Parking is very limited at Fort St Catherine, but minibuses will be available from Tiger Bay, East End Primary School and Tobacco Bay.

Cup Match Fever comes right in the middle of the four-day holiday break.

Mr Ramotar said: “Those two weekdays off work make Cup Match unique. You don’t have to worry about going to work until Monday morning.

“We were able to fuse that Caribbean culture with the DJs that we bring. That gives Bermudian and visitors a feel of that Caribbean vibe.”

GET BOWLED OVER AT THE CRICKET

For the original Cup Match experience, of course, head to St George’s Cricket Club for the classic encounter between St George’s versus Somerset.

There’s always plenty of talent on display as Bermuda’s finest cricketers go head-to-head throughout Thursday and Friday, often culminating in a tense finale as one team pushes for a victory on the Friday afternoon.

Even if you don’t like cricket, you can enjoy a full day at the ground without watching a ball being bowled: chat with old friends, make new friends, feast on Bermudian cuisine from the food stands, sample the rum swizzle and try your luck at Crown and Anchor – but remember that those last two activities don’t always mix well!

A spokesman for the Bermuda Tourism Authority said: “We encourage visitors on the island to come out and experience the electrifying energy in and around the Cup Match grounds.

“It truly is a spectacle unlike any other. Mouth-watering local authentic cuisine, friendly team rivalry, and unforgettable festive spirit.”

The unfinished church in Bermuda dates back to 1874 when construction began.

If a full day at the cricket is too much, why not spend part of the day checking out the Town of St George?

A Unesco World Heritage site, St George’s offers a glimpse of 17th century Bermudian life in a picturesque setting, with historic buildings such as the Unfinished Church, St Peter’s Church, the Fort of St Catherine or the Alexandra Battery. Indulge in fun activities at Tobacco Bay or try out the food and ocean views at the White Horse, Wahoo’s Bistro or The Wharf.

THE TRUE BERMUDIAN EXPERIENCE

Locals and visitors alike can visit the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s gotobermuda.com website for details about events taking place over the holiday.

A spokesman said: “Those who are seeking alternative options to the Cup Match game can experience outdoor activities including camping or picnicking at various national parks, enjoying the pink-sand South Shore beaches, spending the day on the water via boat or simply relaxing.

“There is also no shortage of evening activities or nightlife for those wishing for the festivities to continue.”

As traditional as our shorts, one of the best ways to spend a summer’s day, or evening, is totie your boat up to someone else’s, hop from one to another, or in and out of the water, enjoying a raft-up.

With so many spots around our beautiful island to drop your anchor, you are spoiled for choice. Do you want cliff jumping, partying, a family-friendly area or all of the above? How can you keep yourself and everyone on board safe? What should you take with you? What if you don’t own your own boat? And, where are the best places to go? We give you the lowdown.

MANGROVE BAY AND KINGS POINT

Ideal for parties and family-friendly raft-ups, Mangrove Bay is always a hive of activity during the summer and never more so than on the final day of the Cup Match holiday when Bermuda’s boating community – along with copious friends and family – heads out west for the Non-Mariners Race. With shallow, protected waters and small islands with their own beaches extending out to Kings Point, this is a great spot for exploring, floating, paddling and socialising.

SOMERSET LONG BAY AND CAMBRIDGE BEACHES

The protected stretch of water along Cambridge Beaches and Somerset Long Bay is popular for parties and families. As an added bonus, if you have left your drinks or picnic bag at home, or don’t want to prepare your own food, you can stroll through the turquoise waters movie-star style and order from Breezes at Cambridges Beaches.

ELY’S HARBOUR

Another piece of west end raft-up paradise, Ely’s Harbour is more peaceful than Mangrove and Somerset Long Bays, and there are small beaches and islands to explore. Swimming among sea turtles used to be a given here, but sadly they are now more scarce, but the large parrot fish still make it worth bringing your snorkel and mask.

PARADISE LAKES

Secluded, protected and calm, Paradise Lakes is perfect for big raft-up parties, or, because there are so many areas to anchor, a smaller, more private raft-up. The water is deep so an abundance of floats is a must if you want to relax in the water instead of having a full-day work out.

DEEP BAY

If it’s adrenaline you want, raft-up at Deep Bay by Admiralty House Park. A great spot for cliff jumping, you need to be confident of leaving that ledge without screaming too loud, because everyone will be watching you.

POLICE BEACH

Shallow enough to stand in the water instead of on a float, a raft-up by Police Beach is ideal if you have young children. Lots of sand for digging. Great areas for exploring and snorkelling. It’s also a good spot for beginners, because, said a friend who speaks from personal experience: “You can literally drag your boat to where you want it and put the anchor in by hand!”

ST GEORGE’S HARBOUR

This gorgeous expanse of water has something for everyone. Cliff jumping from Higgs and Horseshoe islands, views back to St George’s and of the other harbour islands, as well as lots of delicious restaurant options from which you can order your raft-up fare.

CASTLE HARBOUR

One of the most picturesque raft-up spots around Bermuda – and that’s saying something – is Castle Harbour. With areas shallow enough to stand in and beaches to rival the best in the world, the water is nearly always clear enough to see your toes. It’s also huge, so you can spread out from other raft-ups. Frick’s Point and beach is always popular and great for snorkelling, particularly around Castle Island.

What if you don’t have your own boat?

You can still enjoy a raft-up, even if you don’t have your own boat or don’t want to wait, hopefully, for an invitation.

BDA Watersports at Robinson’s Marina, by Somerset Bridge, rents out Boston Whalers and Pontoons if you are confident being your own captain, or chartered private boats with an experienced captain included, if you are not: https://bdawatersports.com/boats/

Island Boat Club membership gives you the option of ‘part ownership’ without the hassle and added expense of owning your own vessel. Located at Caroline Bay and Boat Port, behind St George’s cricket club, the club offers three different membership options: https://www.islandboatclub.bm

HOW TO STAY SAFE

Without wanting to put a downer on this article, where boats and water are concerned, things can go wrong quickly if you don’t adhere to some basic safety guidelines. Isaiah Hayward, manager at BDA Watersports and Jack Bridges, owner of Island Boat Club, shared their tips for a safe raft-up:

If you’re going to a busy area, operate the boat as slowly as possible. “Have your head on a swivel”. Look all around and in the water. Make sure you have a clear path.

  • Everyone should have a life jacket.
  • The driver must never be under the influence of anything.
  • Have a working cell phone in case of emergencies. You always need a way to contact the shore.
  • Have a first aid kit on board.

WHAT TO BRING

  • Food and drink, in particular plenty of water, are a must but here are some other fun items that make for an even better raft-up:
  • Large floats and something to tie them onto the boat with. If they have a cup holder for your drinks, even better.
  • Noodles
  • Goggles or snorkel and mask, not just for exploring what’s going on under the water, but also for diving down to retrieve something you’ve dropped.
  • Floatable Croakies for your sunglasses so they don’t end up on the seafloor.
  • Ice! Drinks are better served cold.
  • Bluetooth-enabled speakers
  • A paddle board – it doubles up as a great way to serve drinks.

KEEP OFF THE GRASS

And finally, Bermuda’s seagrass has been decimated in recent years, along with our turtle population. If you see some seagrass, please keep your anchors as far away from it as possible.

A summer in Bermuda means a lot of things – spending time at the gorgeous beaches, going out on a boat to enjoy crystal clear water and my favourite, alfresco dining. Bermuda has a vibrant culinary scene including fresh seafood along with international flavours. There is a variety of dining options to satisfy every palate.

For a foodie like me, summer time means lots of alfresco dining! There’s just something magical about sitting outdoors to eat a delicious meal and sip a cool drink. But just because a restaurant has outdoor dining doesn’t mean it’s a good vibe. In this roundup, I’m sharing my ten favorite places to grab a meal outside. My criteria includes views, shade from the sun and of course, the food. Without further ado, here are my top ten restaurants for alfresco dining this summer.

1609 AT HAMILTON PRINCESS

So technically this isn’t alfresco as the restaurant is enclosed in glass but it might as well be! 1609 gets my vote as one of my top restaurants for alfresco dining simply because you are basically sitting above the water in a serene atmosphere.

The cocktail list is tequila and mezcal focused while the food is fresh Mexican with guacamole, ceviches, a variety of tacos and freshly grilled meats available. 1609 is pretty perfect for summer alfresco dining. Hot tip: book a table 30 mins before sunset to experience the magic.

RUSTICO

Delicious Italian on a covered patio? Yes please! Rustico is one of those classic Bermuda restaurants with great service and great food to match. The patio is fabulous, especially now that it’s completely covered with a weather-proof tent.

Rustico is famous for its incredible thin crust pizzas, fresh seafood and many other Italian classics. The wine list is extensive and their house made desserts are to die for. Hot tip: It can get a bit warm on the patio during the day, so book a table in the evening.

WAHOO’S BISTRO

If you want amazing, fresh seafood in a truly Bermudian environment, Wahoo’s is the place to go. The majority of the restaurant is open air and there’s a deck with a retractable roof in case the weather isn’t that great.

Some of my faovurite days have been spent enjoying lunch or dinner here. Whatever you do, order the fresh catch of the day, which will be listed on the blackboard. You can’t go wrong with any of the options, but if you see Red Hind or Rockfish Ribs, either one of those for a sublime meal. Hot tip: If you aren’t super hungry, order a single Wahoo Taco with a glass of their incredible Rum Swizzle.

AURORA AT NEWSTEAD

An extensive seafood menu and gorgeous view of Hamilton? That’s exactly what you get when you dine at Aurora. The menu is fantastic and the execution is even better. Plus, the patio is large so whether you come with a large or small group, you’ll have a great view. And because it’s right above the water, the breeze is nice and there are umbrellas to help with the sun. Hot tip: Go for a lazy lunch, order a bottle of rose and enjoy the afternoon!

SEA BREEZE AT THE LIDO COMPLEX

With gorgeous views of the South Shore, Sea Breeze is a must do for this list. Whether you go for a long lunch or on the weekend for live entertainment, this dining spot is exactly what comes to mind when I hear the words alfresco dining.

Sea Breeze is known for its extensive sushi and tapas menu, but there’s also a large pizza menu, bar snacks, impressive cocktail list and wine menu. It’s a great spot for weekend dining or whenever you have a lot of time. Hot tip: Book a table on a Friday night to enjoy some of Bermuda’s best live music.

HUCKLEBERRY AT ROSEDON

If you’re looking for classic alfresco garden vibes, Huckleberry is the place for you. With excellent menus for brunch, lunch, dinner and happy hour, you can quite literally dine alfresco here any time of the day.

As Bermuda’s only Relais + Chateau property, you will experience exemplary dining and service to match. The little touches here make a big difference and the urban oasis setting adds to the wonderful experience. Hot tip: Book a table on the covered porch for the best experience.

PINK BEACH CLUB AT THE LOREN

If you want to dine with the sound of the ocean crashing, Pink Beach Club is for you. The restaurant is covered but is open air so you don’t have to worry about the sun beaming in your face and you still get the alfresco experience.

The food here is always good (tacos are a fave) as are the drinks. I highly recommend coming on a day when you aren’t in a rush as Pink Beach Club is definitely a place for a relaxed meal. Hot tip: Ask for a table on the outer edge to truly experience the waves crashing.

SUL VERDE AT ROSEWOOD BERMUDA

As I mentioned above, great Italian food and alfresco dining go hand in hand. And while Sul Verde is Italian food, the experience here is very different from the alfresco experience at Rustico. Sul Verde overlooks Tucker’s Point Golf Course and you get ocean views from the elevated restaurant.

The wraparound porch is large which means you usually get a seat. It’s completely covered and there are ceiling fans to keep you cool. The menu has pizza, pasta, sandwiches, fresh seafood and much more. There’s also a great cocktail and wine list. Hot tip: Order from the pizz menu and get a bottle of rosé. Sit for hours enjoying your fabulous life.

BREEZE’S AT CAMBRIDGE BEACHES

Breeze’s is one of the restaurants that makes you feel like you are on vacation. It’s steps away from the beach and truly has that beach bar vibe. It’s chic but still very casual and like many others on the list, is a great place to sit and laze while eating and drinking.

The menu has sandwiches, salads, burgers, pastas, catch of the day and much more depending on if you come for lunch or dinner. There’s also a large vegetarian offering for those who don’t eat meat. Hot tip: You can arrive by boat, anchor and walk right up.

THE WHARF

If you haven’t caught on by now, my favourite alfresco dining tends to be waterside. The Wharf offers one of the best waterside dining options in Bermuda right next to St. George’s Harbour. There are two main outdoor dining spaces – on the porch attached to the restaurant and then the entire wharf next to the harbour with umbrellas for covering.

The Wharf offers a very large menu with a separate sushi and pizza menu. I typically will order sushi and pizza to share with whoever I’m dining with along with a glass of rosé. The Wharf is great for people watching as the area is bustling when cruise ships are on island. Hot tip: Ask for a table right next to the water and feed the fish your leftovers.

There you have it, my fellow food enthusiasts – the top ten restaurants in Bermuda for alfresco dining. No matter which one you choose, you’re in for a great culinary experience that will leave you craving more. Happy dining!

Summer is the perfect time for outdoor gatherings (especially if you live in beautiful Bermuda), and what better way to celebrate the season than by hosting a summer soiree? It provides the perfect opportunity to hang out with friends and family in warm balmy weather, eat really delicious foods and open a bottle of chilled wine. Whether you’re planning a small gathering or a larger event, here are five tips to help you host the best summer soiree.

  1. SET THE TONE WITH THE PERFECT THEME

One of the best ways to create a memorable summer soiree is to choose a theme that sets the tone for the event. A beach party, luau, or garden party are all popular themes for summer gatherings, but don’t be afraid to get creative and come up with something innovative that speaks to your personal style. I am a big fan of garden chic. Once you’ve chosen your theme, make sure to carry it through all aspects of the event, from decorations to food and drinks.

2. CREATE A COMFORTABLE AND INVITING ATMOSPHERE

To ensure that your guests feel welcome and relaxed, it’s important to create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. This begins when your guests arrive, so one should consider suitable parking arrangements and helpful sign postings if guests are unfamiliar with the location. In addition to, thoughtful decor choices, such as outdoor lighting, cozy seating areas, and ambient music. Make sure that there is plenty of seating available, both indoors and outdoors, so that guests can mingle and socialize.

3. PLAN A MENU THAT CATERS TO ALL TASTES

When it comes to hosting a summer soiree, the food and drinks you serve are just as important as the atmosphere you create. Plan a menu that caters to all tastes, including vegetarian and gluten-free options, and be sure to have plenty of refreshing beverages on hand to keep your guests cool and hydrated. Consider setting up a DIY cocktail station or a self-serve lemonade stand to add a fun and interactive element to the event. This will also allow you to enjoy hosting without acting as the bartender for the event.

Here are some summer soiree menu ideas to consider:

APPETIZERS

  • Fresh fruit skewers with yogurt dip
  • Caprese salad skewers
  • Bruschetta with tomato, basil, and balsamic glaze
  • Grilled vegetable platter with hummus dip
  • Shrimp cocktail with cocktail sauce

ENTREES

  • Grilled chicken or shrimp skewers with a side of mixed greens
  • Veggie or beef burgers with all the fixings
  • Grilled fish tacos with avocado and tomato salsa
  • BBQ pulled pork or chicken sliders
  • Grilled vegetable kabobs with quinoa salad

SIDES

  • Grilled corn on the cob with herb butter
  • Creamy coleslaw with carrots and cabbage
  • Grilled sweet potato fries
  • Mixed greens salad with strawberries, feta, and almonds
  • Pasta salad with roasted vegetables and lemon vinaigrette

DESSERTS

  • Fresh fruit salad with honey and mint
  • S’mores dip with graham crackers
  • Grilled peaches with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce
  • Mini strawberry shortcakes with whipped cream
  • Lemon bars or mini tarts with raspberry jam

BEVERAGES

  • Iced tea or lemonade with fresh herbs or fruit
  • Sangria with fresh berries and citrus
  • Watermelon or cucumber-infused water
  • Margaritas or mojitos with fresh mint and lime
  • Craft beer or wine from local vineyards or breweries

With these summer soiree menu ideas, you;re sure to create a delicious and memorable spread that everyone will enjoy! And, if you don’t feel like cooking, there are always great catering options available to keep things simple and mess free.

4. KEEP YOUR GUESTS ENTERTAINED

To ensure that your guests have a great time, it’s important to plan activities and entertainment that everyone can enjoy. Lawn games, such as cornhole and croquet, are always a hit, as are karaoke or a DIY photo booth. Consider hiring a local band or DJ to provide music, or create a playlist of upbeat summer tunes to keep the party going.

5. PLAN FOR SAFETY AND COMFORT

Finally, it’s important to plan for safety and comfort at your summer soiree. If you’re hosting the event outdoors, make sure to provide shade, such as a tent or umbrellas, to protect your guests from the sun. Provide insect repellent such as citronella candles and sunscreen, and consider setting up a first-aid kit in case of any accidents. If you plan on serving alcohol, make sure to have a designated driver or offer alternative transportation options for your guests.

Hosting a summer soiree can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it requires careful planning and attention to detail. By following these five tips, you can create a memorable event that your guests will be talking about for years to come. Remember to have fun, stay organized, and enjoy the company of your loved ones as you celebrate the season in style.
